Greenpower Energy Ltd plans to use Victoria’s brown coal reserves from the Gippsland region to produce synthetic crude oil (CTL).
Chief investigator Professor Richard Billo says the company is very encouraged by the results of tests by scientists from the University of Texas based on a 60 kg sample of brown coal from the Gippsland region to determine the efficacy of the technology. "It is very clear to us Gippsland brown coal is suited to crude oil conversion and that these conversions could be undertaken on a much bigger scale,” Professor Billo said.
The company plans to meet with the Department of Primary Industry's Clean Coal Victoria group as a first step to having plans for a coal to liquid (CTL) pilot plant approved.
