Accelergy Secures License From ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Company to Commercialize Direct Coal-to-Liquids Technology

Accelergy acquires key license to ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Company’s Microcatalytic Direct Coal Liquefaction (“MCL”) technology to produce fuels and chemicals from coal

Houston – Accelergy Corporation, a leading alternative energy technology company, today announced a global licensing agreement with ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Company (EMRE), for Accelergy to produce liquid fuels and chemicals from abundant coal resources using EMRE technology.

“Accelergy’s license of EMRE’s Microcatalytic Direct Coal Liquefaction technology (MCL) is a strategic asset for Accelergy, allowing us to bring coal and biomass based fuels to market,” said Tim Vail, CEO of Accelergy. “By coupling the advanced MCL technology with advanced biomass conversion technology, Accelergy is uniquely positioned to convert low value coal into specialty fuels at higher efficiencies than indirect conversion technologies. This reduces the environmental impact compared to current coal to liquids technology.”

Accelergy’s coal and biomass liquefaction process combines the company’s own novel catalytic process technologies with EMRE’s MCL technology. Utilizing this process, Accelergy can produce a range of high-grade fuels, such as advanced jet fuel, for a broad range of customers. By coupling MCL with biomass co-conversion, Accelergy can reduce emissions of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2).

Accelergy’s world-class team, with expertise from corporations including EMRE, brings decades of experience in catalytic materials and coal conversion technologies. Accelergy’s state-of-the-art direct coal and biomass liquefaction technologies yield higher overall thermal efficiency, lower CO2 footprint and lower unit costs than current coal-to-liquid options. The company’s process directly produces a tunable range of fuels from gasoline to diesel to high-quality synthetic jet fuel. Accelergy is backed by leading cleantech investors, including Advent International, Goldman Sachs, Lux Capital, Mobius VC, Nth Power, Sequoia Capital China and Technology Partners.
