Coal seam information site goes live
By Lisa Chidlow

We've heard a lot about coal seam gas over the last six months, now there is solid data informing the conversation.

When we look back on the year that was for 2011, perhaps one of the most contentious issues will be the subject of coal seam gas.

Debate has raged on the issue all year and as a result airwaves, newspapers and television have bombarded us with many different angles and pros and cons on the subject.

So much so, we may be starting to feel a bit overwhelmed with information. This is where a new data journalism site hopes to help.

Launched today, the ABC's Coal Seam Gas: By the Numbers website aims to take a very complex issue - in this case coal seam gas - then use what is sometimes very dense information and present it using graphics, text and interactive maps.

Co-ordinator of the project, Wendy Carlisle joined Mornings Presenter Angela Owens to discuss it.

For an overview of the site, go to coverage by ABC Rural.

Or you can access the Coal Seam Gas: By the Numbers directly.
